From time to time, we hear reports from instructors whose students say they cannot see or find their feedback on assignments. There are a few things that could be causing this:
- The student may just need to stretch out the browser window on their computer, as the feedback link is on the far right side of the screen. Canvas uses an adaptive screen, which automatically adjusts what is displayed depending on the size of the window. To view comments, we recommend making the browser window full screen.
- If grading comments are still not showing up, students may be looking in the wrong place. All comments appear in the individual assignment. To view the feedback, students should go to the assignment in question and select Submission Details on the right side of the screen.
When students look for comments on the most recently uploaded version of an assignment, they should be aware that there are different comment types. Instructors may leave all, some, or none of these types of comments.
The Three Basic Types of Comments:
1. Overall Comments
These comments can be found in the right sidebar. Any files that an instructor or a TA has uploaded regarding the student’s submission will also appear here.
2. Comments on the Specific File
On the Submission Details screen, select View Feedback.
This opens the student’s file in SpeedGrader (Crocodoc) so the student can see instructor feedback.
NOTE: This type of comment is not viewable on mobile devices.
3. Comments on the Rubric
A grading rubric can be provided for the assignment for a more specific breakdown of points. The rubric can be seen at the bottom of the assignment page. For students to view how they performed within the rubric guidelines, select Show Rubric on the Submission Details page.
