Using Announcements as Your Course Home Page

Earlier this year, a new feature was added to Canvas that allows you to display course announcements at the top of your course home page. This make it easier for students to avoid missing any important information in your course. This is what it looks like in a Canvas course with this feature enabled:

If you want to take advantage of this in your course, follow the five simple steps below (click on the images to enlarge.)

Step 1: In the top right corner of your course home page, select the “Choose Home Page” option.

Step 2: Select a “Pages” page for the home page. If you don’t have a page, you will need to create a new page first, then designate it as the “Front Page.” Then return to the home page > Choose Home Page > choose “Pages Front Page.”

Step 3: Navigate to the “Settings” tab in the left navigation. Scroll all the way down to the bottom and click “More Options.”

Step 4: Check the “Show recent announcements on Course home page” option and select how many announcements you wish to show using the drop-down menu.

Step 5: Scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Update Course Details.”

1.                    2.                               3.                                             4 & 5.

It’s as easy as that! You can read more about this new capability in the Canvas production release notes.
